title: "About us" |
--- |
As humanity progresses, computers and softwares take a bigger place in our lives. Today, we have unimaginably more computing power, data and connectivity than we have 30 years ago and our lives are increasingly shaped by these resources. |
The more important the freedom of people in the world, the more important the freedom of information systems. Freedom means having a control on the forces that shape our lives; and today, on the digital systems which are very significant for our lives, the users are the least control over them. |
Free Software Association is a community of people defending the free software movement and the freedom of all people in the modern world. Starting with the software freedom, Free Software Association advocates the freedom of people with the motto "**Use, Study, Share, Improve!**" in connection with hardware freedom, Internet freedom, document freedom and freedom of information. |
In the ideal world of Free Software Association; |
* All software is free for everyone to use, study, share and improve, |
* All hardware can be used, hacked, inspected, replaced and most importantly repaired without any limitation, |
* Internet (as the greatest and liberating machine created by humanity) is free (libre) and available as intended and deserved, |
* Privacy is essential, not collateral. People can keep the details of their private life safely. |
For this purpose, the Free Software Foundation, |
* Organizes trainings, workshops and dissemination activities to spread GNU philosophy and the use of free software. |
* Encourages people to use and develop free software so that the benefits of the work of the public and civil society can be shared with all humanity. |
* Works for Net Neutrality and publicly accessible internet. |
* Opposes the effort to create a surveillance society by limiting our fundamental rights and freedoms using technologies that we use in our life, |
* Supports a brand new communication culture against the usage of social networks as a means of consumption and exhibition. |
* Opposes to make scientific and technological accumulation as personal or private property. |
* Advocates collaborative production models and licenses against patents and licenses that establish a non-public dominance over these common savings. |
Free Software Association works to achieve its goal of "Free software, free society" theorized by Richard M. Stallman. |

For several years, there has been an uprasing agains GPG. Every now and then someone writes up a blog post and condemn OpenPG and it's implementations for being too hard to use or too easy to mess up. The GPG side is mostly silent... So, this article is in defence of GPG. |

There is a wide spread misconseption about freedom. Almost everyone think freedom is theirs(!) to decide. So many sentences starting with "my freedom" are being heard, one may simply get convinced that everybody has some sort of freedom pouch they hang from their belt. |

This isn't a theoretical piece about freedom and digital technologies. This is a real ongoing trend that is at best observed around secure messaging application Signal by Open Whisper Systems and it's founder Moxie Merlinspike. His view and management of Signal reflects a wider trend that jepordises world's freedom. |

<content><p>For several years, there has been an uprasing agains GPG. Every now and then someone writes up a blog post and condemn OpenPG and it&rsquo;s implementations for being too hard to use or too easy to mess up. The GPG side is mostly silent&hellip; So, this article is in defence of GPG.</p> |
<p>Main points made against GPG can be listed like this:</p> |
<ol start="0"> |
<li>GPG is too complicated for &ldquo;normal&rdquo; users</li> |
<li>Because GPG is too complicated it&rsquo;s userbase is minuscule</li> |
<li>Email is inherently impossible to secure so don&rsquo;t even bother encrypting it, just abandon GPG</li> |
<li>Nobody bothers to read emails for &ldquo;normal&rdquo; people so don&rsquo;t encrypt</li> |
<li>TLS has done much more for email security than GPG</li> |
<li>GPG is error prone and security wise it is dangerous for people to use it when actual security is needed.</li> |
<li>For various reasons, only cryptonerds use it and take pride on GPG, so it is lame</li> |
<li>GPG&rsquo;s trust model (web of trust) is broken and only cryptonerds are keeping it alive</li> |
<li>GPG is old</li> |
<li>There are better [insert anything involving app like crypto tools] why bother with GPG</li> |
<li>GPG crypto has [Insert any long term RSA based cryptography&rsquo;s short comings and trust problems] why not use modern crypto</li> |
</ol> |
<p>During these discussion, these point are mostly assumed to be true;</p> |
<ol start="0"> |
<li>People are stupid and lazy so are the users of encryption tools,</li> |
<li>Since users are stupid and lazy tools should be designed keeping that in mind,</li> |
<li>Designing for stupid and lazy requires stripping people from anything than needed(i.e freedom),</li> |
<li>If security is not absolute it is worthless</li> |
<li>If privacy is not absolute, anonymity is worthless</li> |
<li>If your adversary cannot compromise x of your security then there is no need for GPG even for privacy</li> |
</ol> |
